Purpose

This permanent visa allows a single older person who depends financially on a relative in Australia to move permanently to Australia.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be outside Australia when applying and when the decision is made.
• Be old enough to receive the Australian age pension.
• Have no partner.
• Have depended on your Australian relative for food, shelter and clothing for at least three years before applying.
• Be sponsored by an eligible relative or that relative’s partner.
• Obtain an assurance of support when requested.
• Meet health and character requirements, along with applying family members.
• Repay any Australian Government debt, or have an approved repayment arrangement.
• Not be affected by visa cancellation or refusal restrictions.
• Meet the best-interests-of-the-child requirement for applicants under 18.

Dependency may result from a disability that prevents you from working.

Sponsor requirements

The sponsor must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Be settled in Australia.
• Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
• Complete Form 40 Sponsorship for migration to Australia.

The Department must approve the sponsorship.

Stay and rights

This is a permanent visa. You can:

• Stay in Australia indefinitely.
• Work and study in Australia.
• Enrol in Medicare.
• Access free Adult Migrant English Program classes, if eligible.
• Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia.
• Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

Newly arrived residents may need to wait before accessing certain Australian Government payments and benefits.

For citizenship purposes, permanent residence starts when you enter Australia on this visa. If you previously held a permanent visa immediately before last leaving Australia, it starts when this visa is granted.

Family provisions

You may include dependent children and stepchildren when applying, or add them before a decision is made.

You must declare all family members in the application, whether migrating or not.

A dependent child may be:

• Under 18; or
• Aged 18 to under 23 and dependent on you or your partner; or
• Aged 23 or older, dependent because of physical or cognitive limitations preventing self-support.

Applying family members must meet health and character requirements. Non-migrating family members may also need to meet health requirements.

For a child under 18, obtain consent from each person with legal authority over where the child lives who is not migrating. Use Form 1229, a statutory declaration, relevant court orders, or evidence that home-country law permits migration.

If a child will not stay with a relative or legal guardian, provide Form 1257.

Cost

The visa costs from AUD6,600. Limited concessions apply.

• Pay the first instalment when applying.
• Pay the second instalment when requested.
• Additional charges apply for family members.
• Health examinations, police certificates and biometrics may create additional costs.
• The Visa Pricing Estimator does not include the second instalment or other costs.

From 1 July 2026, eligible citizens of specified Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste may receive a lower visa application charge when applying with a valid passport. Eligible family members are assessed through the primary applicant or visa holder.

Processing

Demand exceeds available places, and processing can be lengthy. Applications are subject to capping and queueing.

Processing may take longer if:

• Forms are incomplete or incorrect.
• Required documents are missing.
• Further information is needed.
• Information takes longer to verify.

The Department cannot process an application unless the correct visa application charge is paid.

Required documents

Provide accurate information and documents. Failure to prove identity or providing untrue information can result in refusal and may affect future visa grants for up to 10 years.

Identity

Provide:

• Passport pages showing photo, personal details, issue and expiry dates.
• National identity card, if available.
• Evidence of any name change.
• Four recent colour passport-size photographs for each applicant.

You do not need a valid passport to apply, but must provide your most recent passport details. A valid passport is required for visa grant.

Relationship and dependency

Provide evidence of your relationship to the sponsor, such as:

• Birth, marriage, death or adoption certificates.
• Official family status certificates or family books.

Provide evidence of at least three years of financial support for basic needs, such as:

• Bank statements.
• Money transfer records.
• Rent receipts.

Sponsor evidence

Provide evidence of the sponsor’s Australian citizenship, permanent residence, or eligible New Zealand citizen status, such as:

• Citizenship certificate.
• Passport.
• Valid visa for an eligible New Zealand citizen.

Children aged 18 or over

For a dependent child aged 18 or over, provide:

• Form 47a.
• Relationship evidence.
• Evidence of at least 12 months’ financial dependency.
• Evidence of study, residence or tax records where relevant.
• Medical evidence for physical or cognitive limitations, if applicable.

Translation and certification

• Translate all non-English documents into English.
• Provide originals and translations.
• Use NAATI-accredited translators in Australia.
• Send original police certificates only when requested.
• Send certified copies of other documents.

How to apply

1. Complete Form 47OF Application for migration to Australia by other family members in English.
2. Have your sponsor complete Form 40.
3. Pay the first instalment through ImmiAccount before lodging.
4. Include payment evidence, forms and required documents.
5. Send the paper application by post or courier to the Parent, Child and Other Family Processing Centre in Perth, using the address on the form.

You cannot submit the application in person or pay in person.

An incomplete application may be invalid and will not be processed. Keep copies of the complete application and supporting documents.

After applying

After receiving the acknowledgement letter, you can import the paper application into ImmiAccount. This allows you to:

• Attach documents.
• View messages and application status.
• Update details.
• Apply for a Bridging Visa.
• Withdraw the application.

Paper applications lodged outside Australia before 25 June 2020 may not be importable. From 23 July 2025, applicants may import eligible paper applications into ImmiAccount.

You must:

• Tell the Department about changes to contact details, passport details, births or withdrawal intentions.
• Provide requested health examinations, biometrics or further information.
• Pay the second instalment when invoiced.
• Provide an assurance of support when requested.

Do not arrange travel to Australia until the visa is granted in writing.

Travel and obligations

You must enter Australia before the date in the grant letter. The first entry date is generally 12 months after visa grant.

You may travel in and out of Australia as often as you wish for five years from grant. After the five-year travel facility expires, obtain a Resident Return Visa to re-enter as a permanent resident.

The visa is digitally linked to your passport; no visa label is issued.
