Specified work

UK passport holders applying on or after 1 July 2024 using their UK passport can be granted this visa without meeting the six-month specified-work requirement.

Financial capacity

You must have enough funds for your stay and departure. This is usually about AUD5,000, plus onward travel fare.

Applicants in Australia do not need to provide financial evidence. Applicants outside Australia should attach evidence to avoid possible processing delays.

Stay and travel

The visa generally allows a stay of up to 12 months. The start date depends on your location and previous visa status.

Circumstance Stay period starts
On second 417 or related bridging visa Second visa expiry date
In Australia on another visa Visa grant date
On Pandemic Event 408 visa Pandemic Event visa expiry date
Outside Australia First entry to Australia

If granted outside Australia, you must enter Australia within 12 months of grant. This timeframe cannot be extended or deferred.

Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa period.

You may leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you want while the visa is in effect.

Work and study rights

You can:

  • Do any kind of work.
  • Work short-term to support your holiday.
  • Study for up to 4 months (17 weeks).
  • Travel in and out of Australia while the visa remains valid.

Usually, you may work for the same employer for only 6 months. You may work another six months for an employer you worked for on your first or second Working Holiday visa.

Check your individual conditions in your visa grant letter or through VEVO.

  • You cannot include family members in the application.

If you cannot provide a birth certificate, provide identity pages from a family book, government-issued identification, or a court-issued identity document.

If your name has changed, provide evidence such as a marriage certificate, divorce certificate, change-of-name document, or documents showing other names used.

Financial evidence

If applying outside Australia, provide evidence of:

  • About AUD5,000 for your stay; and

  • Payslips

Character documents

You may be asked for:

  • An Australian Federal Police complete disclosure National Police Certificate.
  • Overseas police certificates for countries where you spent 12 months or more in the past 10 years since turning 16.
  • Military service records or discharge papers.

Only provide these documents if requested.

Grant-location requirements

Declare your location correctly when applying.

  • If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted.
  • If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
  • An associated bridging visa is available only if you were in Australia when you applied.

Obligations

You must:

  • Meet all visa conditions.
  • Obey Australian laws.
  • Pay tax on Australian earnings.
  • Update the Department if your passport changes.
  • Use the passport linked to your visa grant to enter Australia.
  • Keep a copy of your visa grant notification.

Employers may need to pay superannuation if you earn over the applicable threshold. You may be able to access superannuation after leaving Australia.

Important warnings

  • Processing is longer than usual because of high application volumes.
  • Do not arrange travel until the Department confirms the visa grant in writing.
  • Apply only when ready to enter Australia on this visa.
  • Entering Australia after grant starts the 12-month period, even if travelling only to transit.
  • A later grant of an eVisitor or Transit visa will cause the Working Holiday visa, including work rights, to cease.
  • An ETA does not cease the Working Holiday visa; the Working Holiday visa starts when you enter Australia.
  • You cannot extend this visa.
  • You cannot receive a fourth Working Holiday visa after holding three subclass 417 visas in Australia.
  • A Visitor visa is generally not granted after a Working Holiday visa. Exceptional circumstances are required where it would result in more than 12 consecutive months in Australia.
  • If you obtain a new passport, notify the Department before travel or you may face boarding delays or be refused boarding.
