Purpose

This visa allows eligible people to have a third working holiday in Australia. It permits short-term work to help pay for a holiday.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be aged 18 to 30 inclusive when you apply.
  • Apply before turning 31, by midnight AEST/AEDST the day before your 31st birthday.
  • You may still be granted the visa after turning 31 if you applied while 30.
• Hold a valid passport from an eligible country.
• Have held two Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas in Australia, or hold/have held the bridging visa that took effect after the second subclass 462 visa expired.
• Have complied with conditions on previous subclass 462 visas.
• Complete 6 months of specified subclass 462 work.
• Meet health and character requirements.
• Have repaid, or arranged repayment of, Australian Government debts owed by you or family members.
• Not be affected by visa cancellation or refusal issues.
• Not be accompanied by dependent children.

If applying in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or have had your last substantive visa expire less than 28 days ago.

Eligible passport countries

Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, China (People's Republic of), Czech Republic, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Türkiye, Uruguay, USA and Vietnam.

Stay and travel

The visa allows a stay of up to 12 months, but the start date depends on your circumstances:

• On a second subclass 462 visa or related bridging visa: up to 12 months from when the second visa expired or would have expired.
• In Australia on another visa: 12 months from grant.
• On a COVID-19 Pandemic Event (subclass 408) visa: up to 12 months from when that visa expired or would have expired.
• Outside Australia: 12 months from first entry on this visa.

If granted outside Australia, you must enter Australia within 12 months of grant. This cannot be extended or deferred.

You may leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid. Time outside Australia does not extend the stay period.

If you hold dual citizenship, enter Australia using the passport linked to the visa grant.

Work and study rights

You can:

• Do any kind of work.
• Study for up to 4 months (17 weeks).
• Travel in and out of Australia while the visa is valid.

Usually, you can work for the same employer for only 6 months. You can work another 6 months for an employer you worked for on your first or second Work and Holiday visa.

You must pay tax when working in Australia. Australian workplace laws apply to you.

Your employer may need to pay superannuation if you earn over the applicable amount. You may be able to access your superannuation after leaving Australia.

Family provisions

You cannot include family members in the application.

Dependent children cannot accompany you in Australia at any time on this visa, including for one day. A parent of a child under 18 cannot apply online.

Cost

The visa application charge is AUD1,000.00.

Financial requirement

You must have enough money to support yourself and leave Australia. This is usually:

• About AUD5,000 for your initial stay; and
• The cost of travel after leaving Australia.

If applying in Australia, you do not need to provide financial evidence. If applying outside Australia, failure to attach evidence may delay processing.

The Department may contact employers to verify work claims.

For volunteer bushfire or flood recovery work, provide a signed coordinator or host letter stating your personal details and passport number, duties, work location and postcodes, and number of volunteer days.

Character documents

You may be asked for:

• An Australian Federal Police complete disclosure National Police Certificate.
• Overseas police certificates for countries where you spent 12 months or more in the previous 10 years since turning 16.
• Military service or discharge records.

How to apply

1. Organise health examinations if you choose to complete them before applying.
2. Gather identity, financial and specified-work evidence.
3. Create or log in to an ImmiAccount.
4. Complete the online application and correctly declare your current location.
5. Attach documents and pay the application charge.
6. Keep the transaction reference number.
7. Provide biometrics, health examinations or further information if requested.
8. Tell the Department about mistakes or changes before a decision.

Use Form 1023 to report incorrect answers. Use Form 956A to appoint or withdraw an authorised recipient, or Form 956 to appoint or withdraw an immigration assistance provider.

Application and grant location

You may apply in or outside Australia.

• If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted.
• If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when it is granted.

You must accurately state your location in the application. Selecting the wrong location requires amendment and may delay processing.

A bridging visa can only be associated with an application made while you were in Australia.

Processing

Processing times are longer than usual because of high application volumes. The processing-time guide is indicative only.

Processing may take longer if:

• The application is incomplete or incorrect.
• Required documents are missing.
• More information is needed.
• Information needs verification.

Do not arrange travel to Australia until you receive written notice that the visa has been granted.

Obligations and conditions

You must:

• Comply with all visa conditions.
• Obey Australian laws.
• Pay tax on Australian income.
• Tell the Department about passport, relationship-status or child-birth changes.
• Update passport details after receiving a new passport.

Important warnings

• Do not apply until ready to enter Australia on this visa.
• Once you enter Australia after grant, the 12-month period starts automatically, including if transiting Australia.
• A later grant of another visa, such as an eVisitor or Transit visa, can cause the Work and Holiday visa and its work rights to cease.
• An ETA grant does not cease the Work and Holiday visa, but the ETA cannot operate at the same time.
• You cannot extend this visa.
• You cannot receive a fourth Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa after holding three such visas in Australia.
• A Visitor visa is generally not granted after a Work and Holiday visa. Exceptional circumstances are required if it would result in more than 12 consecutive months in Australia.
• Keep a copy of the visa grant notification while travelling.
