Purpose

This temporary visa allows you to:

• Receive medical treatment or consultation in Australia.
• Donate an organ in Australia.
• Receive an organ from a person travelling with you.
• Support a visa holder receiving treatment or donating an organ.
• Travel under Western Province of Papua New Guinea–Queensland Health arrangements.
• Remain in Australia in limited health-based circumstances if aged 50 or older.

Eligibility

You must be in one of the eligible situations above and meet these requirements:

• Have no medical condition that threatens public health or endangers the Australian community.
• Have adequate funds or access to funds for travel, treatment, living costs and accompanying persons.
• Meet health and character requirements.
• Usually intend to stay temporarily and only undertake permitted activities.
• Repay Australian Government debts, or have a formal repayment arrangement.
• Usually pre-arrange payment for treatment costs.

A hospital letter should confirm treatment approval and arrangements to pay all costs. For public-hospital treatment, the letter must come from the financial officer or administration department and confirm no Australian will be disadvantaged in accessing medical services.

Restrictions for certain visa holders

If applying in Australia, you cannot hold—or have last held—a Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) in the Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream.

This restriction does not apply to applicants aged 50 or older who were refused a permanent visa on health grounds and assessed as unfit to depart Australia.

Applicants aged 50 or older

The temporary-stay intention does not apply if you are in Australia, aged 50 or older, refused a permanent visa for not meeting health requirements, and unfit to depart Australia.

Stay and extension

The Department decides the stay period case by case, including consideration of your treatment plan.

You cannot extend this visa. Apply for another visa if you need to remain longer.

From 1 July 2026, eligible citizens of specified Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste receive a lower charge when lodging a valid application through ImmiAccount using an eligible passport.

Eligible passport countries are:

• Federated States of Micronesia
• Fiji
• Kiribati
• Nauru
• Palau
• Papua New Guinea
• Republic of the Marshall Islands
• Samoa
• Solomon Islands
• Timor-Leste
• Tonga
• Tuvalu
• Vanuatu

You may also need to pay for health examinations, police certificates and biometrics. The visa charge is not refunded if the application is refused.

Rights and conditions

Work

You cannot work except in limited circumstances. Check your specific work conditions in VEVO.

Study

You may study for up to 3 months, or longer if you meet exemption criteria.

Obligations

You must:

• Meet all visa conditions.
• Obey Australian laws.
• Leave Australia before the visa ends.
• Maintain adequate financial capacity.
• Tell the Department about relevant changes in your circumstances.

Support persons

If you apply for treatment or organ donation, a support person may also apply.

A support person can be a family member, friend or another person. Each person must generally submit a separate application unless included in the same passport. The patient’s or donor’s visa must be granted before a support person’s visa can be granted.

Health insurance and medical costs

Health insurance is recommended. You are personally liable for healthcare costs in Australia.

Travel

The visa may have single-entry or multiple-entry travel permission.

• Multiple entry: leave and return as often as you wish while the visa remains valid.
• Single entry, granted offshore: enter Australia once; leaving prevents return.
• Single entry, granted onshore: leave and return once; leaving again prevents return.

You must arrive on or before the visa expiry date. Time outside Australia does not extend the visa.

Check your travel facility in VEVO or your visa grant letter.

Required documents

Provide complete, accurate documents and English translations.

Identity

• Current passport pages showing photo, personal details, issue and expiry dates.
• National identity card, if available.
• Name-change evidence, if applicable.

Treatment or organ donation

Provide a letter from your Australian treating doctor stating:

• Your medical condition.
• Required treatment.
• Estimated treatment timeframe.
• Estimated cost.

Complete Form 1507: Evidence of intended medical treatment if applying in Australia without a substantive visa.

Financial evidence

Provide evidence that you can pay for treatment and support yourself and accompanying persons. This may include:

• Support letters from Australians.
• A doctor or hospital letter confirming satisfactory payment arrangements.
• Required public-hospital financial approval letter.

Children under 18

Provide, where applicable:

• Birth certificate or alternative identity evidence.
• Legal guardianship, adoption or court documents.
• Form 1229 or a statutory declaration from non-travelling persons with legal authority over the child.
• Photo identification for the person giving consent.
• Form 1257 if not staying with a relative or legal guardian.

Other evidence

• Police certificates, if requested.
• Health examination results, if requested.
• Biometrics, if requested.

Non-English documents must be translated into English. Submit both original-language and translated documents. Documents do not need certification unless requested.

How to apply

1. Check that you have a valid passport or travel document.
2. Gather treatment, financial, identity and other supporting documents.
3. Create or log in to ImmiAccount.
4. Select Medical Treatment visa.
5. Complete the application and attach documents.
6. Pay the onshore application charge, if applicable.
7. Submit separate applications for each applicant unless sharing a passport.

You can apply in or outside Australia.

At grant, you must be:

• In Australia if you applied in Australia.
• Outside Australia if you applied outside Australia.

After applying

The Department will confirm receipt through ImmiAccount. You may need to:

• Complete health examinations.
• Provide biometrics.
• Upload further information promptly.
• Correct application mistakes through ImmiAccount.
• Notify the Department of changes to your address, passport, relationship status or a child’s birth.

If applying in Australia, remain lawful while the application is processed. Do not allow your current visa to expire before applying.

If you need to travel while an onshore application is pending, tell the Department. You may be eligible for a Bridging visa B if you hold a Bridging visa A.

Important warnings

• The Department may decide the application without seeking further information.
• Incorrect, incomplete or unverifiable information can delay processing.
• The Department cannot process an application if the correct visa charge is not paid.
• Keep a copy of your visa decision while in Australia.
• Your visa is electronically linked to your passport; no passport label is issued.
