Purpose

The Artist visa allows professional foreign artists to reside in Japan to engage in income-generating artistic creation, including painting, sculpture, music composition, writing, photography, architecture, crafts, and related creative disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Engage in genuinely creative artistic activities that produce income or have commercial/cultural value (the performance of others' works falls under the Entertainer category).
• Present a demonstrated track record of artistic work (exhibitions, publications, performances, awards).
• Provide proof of sufficient financial support through artistic activities or personal savings (there is no fixed minimum income threshold).
• Present a clear plan for artistic activities in Japan.
• Hold a valid passport.

Target creative disciplines include:

• Visual artists (painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers)
• Composers and songwriters creating original music
• Writers and authors producing literary works

Work Rights & Conditions

• Pure self-study or unpaid cultural exploration does not qualify under this status.

Spouses and children of Artist visa holders are eligible to apply for a Dependent (Family Stay) visa.

3. Obtain Visa: Once the COE is issued, submit the visa application along with the COE to the local Japanese Embassy or Consulate overseas.
4. Enter Japan: Receive the visa sticker, travel to Japan, and enter through immigration.
5. Municipal Registration: Register your residential address at the local municipal office within 14 days of arrival.
