Purpose

This visa allows Belgian citizens aged 18 to 30 to holiday, work and study in New Zealand.

You do not need a job offer to apply.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be a Belgian citizen with a valid Belgian passport.
• Be aged 18 to 30.
• Have at least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
• Have an onward ticket or enough money to buy one.
• Have full medical insurance, including hospitalisation cover.
• Not have had approval for a New Zealand working holiday visa before, even if you did not use it.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Genuinely intend to meet the visa conditions.

Approvals for working holiday visas in countries other than New Zealand are allowed.

Stay and visa validity

You can stay for up to 12 months.

You must enter New Zealand within 12 months after the visa is granted.

The visa is valid from:

• The date you enter New Zealand, if applying from outside New Zealand.
• The visa grant date, if already in New Zealand.

You must leave New Zealand before the visa expires.

Work rights and restrictions

You may work in temporary jobs for up to 12 months.

You must:

• Work under an employment contract or contract for services.
• Do legal work only.

You must not:

• Take a permanent job.
• Operate a business as an owner.
• Provide commercial sexual services.
• Invest in a business providing commercial sexual services.

You will need a New Zealand bank account and IRD number to pay tax.

Study

You may study or train for up to 6 months in total.

Travel

After arriving, you may travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like before the visa expires.

You must maintain an onward ticket or enough money to buy one, separate from your living funds.

Health and character

You may be asked to provide:

• A chest X-ray or medical examination.
• Police certificates.

If medical evidence is required after applying, Immigration New Zealand will email instructions.

Required evidence

Prepare evidence of:

• Identity: Passport details.
• Funds: Bank statements, credit card statements, bank drafts or traveller's cheques.
• Onward travel: Travel ticket or funds to buy one.
• Medical insurance: Insurance certificate or insurer approval letter.

Passport validity requirements:

• Applying outside New Zealand: Valid at least 15 months after first arrival.
• Applying in New Zealand: Valid at least 3 months after visa expiry.

Application steps

1. Apply online through Immigration New Zealand online services.
2. Provide passport details exactly as shown in your passport.
3. Answer health and character questions.
4. Provide further evidence if requested.
5. Enter New Zealand within 12 months of visa grant.

Arrival obligations

Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration:

• By air: from 24 hours before your journey begins.
• By sea: from 24 hours before your ship leaves its last overseas port.

You may be asked to show evidence of funds, onward travel and medical insurance on arrival.

Important warnings

Entry permission may be refused if you:

• Are not a genuine visitor.
• Do not meet character requirements.
• Have changed circumstances since the visa was issued.
• Refuse a photo, fingerprint or iris scan.
• Cannot show onward travel evidence or funds to leave New Zealand.
