Purpose & Overview

The Cultural Activities visa (Bunka Katsudo) is designed for foreign nationals seeking to engage in unpaid academic research or study traditional Japanese arts and culture under the guidance of recognized instructors or cultural institutions.

Unlike a Student visa, enrollment in a formal school or university is not required. Qualifying fields of study include:

• Tea ceremony (chado)
• Flower arranging (ikebana)
• Martial arts (judo, kendo, etc.)
• Calligraphy
• Traditional music (shamisen, koto)
• Classical dance (nihon buyo)
• Research in Japanese culture or history at non-academic institutions
• Non-remunerated cultural exchange programs

Note: Language study alone does not qualify unless it is part of a recognized cultural program.

Eligibility Requirements

Work Restrictions & Conditions
