Purpose

This visa allows workers dismissed during a trial period to remain in New Zealand as visitors for up to 3 months.

Eligibility

You must:

• Hold a current work visa restricted to a specific employer.
• Have a trial period of up to 90 days in your employment agreement.
• Have been notified of dismissal during that 90-day trial period.
• Not previously have been the principal applicant under this category.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Genuinely intend to meet visa conditions.
• Have sufficient funds or an acceptable sponsor.
• Have onward travel arrangements or funds to leave New Zealand.

Stay and Conditions

• Stay is limited to up to 3 months.
• You must leave New Zealand before the visa expires.
• You must maintain sufficient funds or sponsorship.
• You must have a ticket out of New Zealand or funds to buy one.

Work Rights

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa.

You may be able to:

• Volunteer.
• Work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

Family Provisions

You may include:

• Your partner.
• Dependent children aged 19 or younger.

Family members must meet identity, health, character and bona fide requirements. They may instead apply for separate visas.

Funds and Sponsorship

You need at least:

• NZD $1,000 per month, or
• NZD $400 per month if accommodation is prepaid.

Evidence may include bank statements, credit-card statements, traveller's cheques, bank drafts, or prepaid accommodation evidence.

An acceptable sponsor may submit a Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) and evidence of their ability to support you.

Onward Travel

You must provide evidence of:

• A ticket to leave New Zealand, or
• Enough money to buy onward travel to a country you can enter.

A sponsor may declare they will cover onward travel costs.

Health and Character

You must:

• Be in good health.
• Be of good character.
• Agree to pay all health-care and medical-assistance costs.

Immigration New Zealand may request a medical examination, chest X-ray or police certificates.

Police certificates may be required if your total time in New Zealand will reach 24 months or more across all visits, or if requested. Certificates must generally be less than 6 months old.

Full medical insurance is recommended.

Required Documents

Provide:

• One acceptable photo for online applications.
• Passport or certificate of identity.
• Evidence of funds, prepaid accommodation or sponsorship.
• Onward-travel evidence.
• Certified full English translations for non-English documents.

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure.

Additional documents may apply:

• Chinese citizens applying from China: Hukou and Chinese identity card; paper applicants must also submit INZ 1027.
• Applicants in Hong Kong or Macao: identity card copy; paper applicants must also submit INZ 1220.

Application Steps

1. Apply online through Immigration Online.
2. Upload your passport copy and supporting evidence.
3. Provide further documents, medical evidence or your passport if requested.
4. Pay the applicable fee for your country and application channel.

From 24 September 2026, new applications for most visitor visas must be submitted through enhanced Immigration Online.

Travel and Arrival

A valid multiple-entry travel condition is required to leave and return to New Zealand. If you leave without one, your visa will expire.

Before travel, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration:

• Air travellers: from 24 hours before travel begins.
• Sea travellers: from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.

You may be refused entry permission if you no longer meet visa requirements, cannot show onward-travel evidence, or refuse biometric collection.
