Purpose & Scope

The Educator visa (教育) is a residence status for foreign nationals teaching at recognized Japanese elementary, junior high, high, secondary, special support, or vocational high schools. It commonly covers foreign language teachers and Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in public or private K–12 schools (including JET Programme participants).

Note: University-level teaching falls under the Professor visa, while teaching at private language schools (eikaiwa) or commercial companies falls under the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa.

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

• Hold a teaching appointment or contract with an elementary, middle, high school, or equivalent institution recognized under Japanese education law.
• Possess relevant teaching qualifications or a degree in education or the subject being taught.
• Hold an employment contract or official letter of appointment from the school or board of education.
• Possess a valid passport.

Period of Stay & Renewal

• University Instruction: Do not apply for the Educator visa to teach at universities; university instructors require the Professor visa.
