- Technical/Engineering: Software development, IT, system analysis, scientific research (chemistry, biology, physics), and data analysis.
- Humanities/International Services: Translation, interpretation, foreign language instruction (private sector), international sales, marketing, and overseas business liaison.

- Language requirement (Effective April 15, 2026):
- Applies to Category 3 or 4 employers (smaller/non-listed companies) hiring for customer-facing, language-using roles (interpretation, translation, hotel front desk, customer service, sales requiring communication).
- Requires CEFR B2-equivalent ability in the working language. For Japanese, this requires meeting one of the following:
- JLPT N2 or higher
- BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test) score of 400+ points
- 20+ years of mid/long-term residence in Japan
- Graduation from a Japanese university
- Japanese compulsory education plus Japanese high school graduation
- Exemptions: Categories 1 and 2 (large/listed companies) and pure-engineering/back-office roles.

- Granted periods: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years.
- Renewals: Renewable indefinitely as long as employment, tax compliance, and qualifying conditions continue.

Important Warnings
- Major vs. job alignment: The field of study must directly correspond to the intended job duties (e.g., a literature major applying as a programmer faces high risk of rejection without relevant work experience).
- Company scrutiny: Small, newly established, or Category 3/4 companies undergo stricter immigration scrutiny.
- Employment gaps: Long-term leaves of absence or unaddressed unemployment can negatively impact visa renewals.
