Purpose
This visa allows eligible Hungarian citizens to holiday in New Zealand while undertaking temporary work and limited study or training.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be aged 18 to 35.
- Be a Hungarian citizen with a valid Hungarian passport.
- Hold a passport valid for at least 3 months after visa expiry.
- Not have previously held a New Zealand working holiday visa, even if you did not use it.
- Be in good health and of good character.
- Have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.
- Have at least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
- Hold full medical insurance for your entire stay.
- Have onward travel arrangements, or enough additional money to buy a ticket.
The money for onward travel must be separate from the NZD $4,200 living-cost requirement.
Stay and visa validity
You may stay for up to 12 months.
You must travel to New Zealand within 12 months of visa issue. You cannot delay or cancel this working holiday visa. If you do not arrive within that period, it expires and you cannot apply for another New Zealand working holiday visa.
The visa starts:
- On entry to New Zealand, if approved while you are outside New Zealand; or
- On the date of issue, if approved while you are already in New Zealand.
Work rights and restrictions
You may work in any lawful job if:
- You work under an employment contract or contract for services.
- You do not take a permanent job.
- You work for any one employer for no more than 3 months.
- You do not operate a business as an owner.
- You do not provide or invest in commercial sexual services.
A job offer is not required.
You need an Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number to pay tax on New Zealand earnings.
Study
You may study or train for up to 6 months in total.
Family
A partner or child cannot be included in this visa application. They must apply for their own visa.
Travel
You may leave and re-enter New Zealand as many times as you wish before the visa expires.
Required evidence
When applying, provide your passport details. Immigration New Zealand may later request:
- Medical examination or chest X-ray evidence.
- Police certificates.
- Evidence of NZD $4,200 available funds.
- Medical insurance evidence.
- An onward ticket or evidence of funds to buy one.
Acceptable living-cost evidence may include bank statements, credit card statements, bank drafts or traveller’s cheques.
Insurance evidence may include an insurance certificate or insurer approval letter.
If required:
- Medical examinations and chest X-rays must be less than 3 months old when received.
- Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when submitted.
- Police and medical certificates not in English require certified English translations.
- Upload scanned copies of original documents.
How to apply

- Create or log in to your online account.
- Complete the application, upload documents and pay applicable fees.
- Check your account for updates and provide any requested information.
- Immigration New Zealand will email its decision.
If approved, you will receive an eVisa.
Arrival obligations
Before travel, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration:
- By air: from 24 hours before your journey begins.
- By sea: from 24 hours before your ship leaves its final overseas port.
On arrival, you may be refused entry permission if you are not a genuine visitor, no longer meet character requirements, have changed circumstances, refuse biometric collection, or cannot show onward travel or sufficient departure funds.
Staying longer
You may be eligible for a further 3 months if you complete 3 months of seasonal work in New Zealand’s viticulture or horticulture industries.

- A previous New Zealand working holiday visa makes you ineligible, even if unused.
- Incorrect passport or identity details may delay processing, lead to refusal, or result in refused entry.
- You cannot take permanent employment.
