Purpose
This visa is for Malaysian citizens aged 18 to 30 who want to holiday, work and study in New Zealand.
You do not need a job offer.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be aged 18 to 30.
- Be a Malaysian citizen with a valid Malaysian passport.
- Not have previously held a New Zealand working holiday visa.
- Be in good health and of good character.
- Have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.
- Have at least NZD $2,250 for living costs.
- Have plans to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.
You may still apply if you have held working holiday visas for countries other than New Zealand.
Stay and entry
You can stay for up to 6 months.
You must enter New Zealand within 12 months of visa grant. If you do not arrive within this period, the visa expires and you cannot apply for another New Zealand working holiday visa.
The visa starts:
- On entry to New Zealand, if granted offshore; or
- On the grant date, if granted while in New Zealand.
Work rights and conditions
You may work in any lawful job if:
- You work under an employment contract or contract for services.
- You do not take a permanent job.
- You do not operate a business as an owner.
- You do not provide commercial sexual services.
- You do not invest in a business providing commercial sexual services.
You must obtain an Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number to pay tax on New Zealand earnings.
Study
You may study or train for up to 6 months in total.
Travel
You may leave and re-enter New Zealand as many times as you like before the visa expires.
Health care
You must pay for any health care or medical assistance needed in New Zealand. Full medical insurance is recommended.
Some people may be eligible for public health care.
Family
Partners and dependent children cannot be included. Each family member must apply for their own visa.
Evidence and documents
When applying, provide your passport details.
Immigration New Zealand may later request:
- Medical examination or chest X-ray evidence.
- Police certificates.
- Proof of at least NZD $2,250.
- An outward travel ticket, or funds to buy one.
Your onward-travel funds must be separate from the NZD $2,250 living-cost requirement.
Accepted financial evidence may include bank statements, credit-card statements, bank drafts or traveller’s cheques.
Document requirements
- Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after visa expiry.
- Submit scanned copies of original documents.
- Submit certified English translations of required non-English medical or police certificates.
- Medical and chest X-ray results must be less than 3 months old when received.
- Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when submitted.

Arrival obligations
Before travel, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration:
- Air travellers: from 24 hours before travel begins.
- Sea travellers: from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.
New Zealand Customs and Biosecurity requirements also apply.
Important warnings
You may be refused entry permission if you:
- Are not a genuine visitor.
- No longer meet character requirements.
- Have had a relevant change in circumstances.
- Refuse biometric collection.
- Cannot show onward travel or sufficient departure funds.

Staying longer
You may be able to apply for a Working Holiday Extension Work Visa for another 3 months if you complete 3 months of seasonal work in New Zealand’s viticulture or horticulture industries.
