Purpose

An NZeTA lets eligible travellers travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa first. At the border, eligible visitors may be granted a visitor visa.

It can also be used to transit through Auckland International Airport.

Eligibility

You may be eligible if you are:

• A citizen of a visa waiver country or territory.
• A Chinese or Pacific Islands Forum country citizen travelling from Australia with an eligible Australian visa.
• A cruise ship or cargo ship passenger.
• An Australian permanent resident.
• An eligible transit passenger.

Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA or visa before travel. They will normally be granted an Australian Resident Visa on arrival, subject to character requirements.

Transit eligibility

To transit through Auckland International Airport, you must be:

• A visa waiver country or territory citizen.
• A transit visa waiver country citizen.
• Travelling to or from Australia with a current Australian entry visa.

Transit passengers must remain in Auckland Airport’s transit area. Transit is not available through other New Zealand airports.

Stay and Travel

An NZeTA is valid for:

• 2 years for travellers.
• 5 years for airline crew members.

Visitors may be granted:

• Up to 3 months per visit.
• Up to 6 months per visit with a UK passport.

You must not spend more than 6 months in any 12-month period in New Zealand.

Transit passengers may stay for up to 24 hours in Auckland Airport’s transit area.

You can travel to New Zealand multiple times while the NZeTA remains valid. A new visa may be granted on each arrival.

Requirements

You must:

• Be in good health.
• Meet character requirements.
• Have genuine reasons to visit or transit.
• Intend to leave New Zealand.
• Have enough money for your stay.
• Meet entry permission requirements on arrival.

You may not meet character requirements if you have:

• A criminal conviction.
• Been deported, removed or excluded from another country.
• Been assessed as a security, public-order or public-interest risk.

If you may not meet character requirements, apply for a visa before travelling.

Funds and onward travel

Visitors must have at least:

• NZD $1,000 per month, or
• NZD $400 per month if accommodation is prepaid.

You cannot rely on a sponsor to cover your New Zealand costs under an NZeTA. If you need sponsorship, apply for a visa before travelling.

You must show a paid ticket out of New Zealand to a country you can enter, or, where applicable:

• A cruise itinerary, or
• A craft owner’s letter confirming departure.

Your departure must be within 3 months of arrival, or 6 months for UK passport holders.

Medical Treatment and Healthcare

You cannot use an NZeTA for medical consultation or treatment. Apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa instead.

You must pay for healthcare or medical assistance needed in New Zealand. Full medical insurance is recommended.

Documents

For the NZeTA request

Provide:

• Your passport.
• One acceptable photo, or a device to take one.

Use the same passport for the NZeTA request and travel. Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after your intended New Zealand departure date.

At check-in and arrival

Carry:

• Your passport.
• NZeTA confirmation email.
• Evidence of onward travel.
• Evidence of funds, if requested.

English translations are recommended for documents not in English.

How to Apply

Request an NZeTA through the official NZeTA website or mobile app.

1. Gather your passport, photo, fund evidence and onward-travel evidence.
2. Enter identity details exactly as shown in your passport.
3. Submit the request and pay the required fees.
4. Allow up to 3 days for checks; longer if further investigation is needed.
5. Check your status online and retain the confirmation email.

The online form requires a separate request for each traveller. The app can request NZeTAs for up to 10 people at once and is cheaper.

Family and Groups

Every family or group member must meet NZeTA requirements.

Arrival and Entry Permission

Having an NZeTA does not guarantee entry. You must obtain entry permission on arrival.

• By sea: from 24 hours before the ship leaves its last overseas port.

Transit passengers at Auckland International Airport do not need to complete the declaration.

Entry permission may be refused if you:

• Do not meet character requirements.
• Have changed circumstances.
• Refuse biometrics.
• Cannot prove onward travel or sufficient funds.

Transit Conditions

Transit passengers must:

• Transit only through Auckland International Airport.
• Stay in the transit area.
• Leave within 24 hours.
• Not collect baggage or stay at a hotel.

There is no transit-area accommodation. If accommodation is needed, request an NZeTA as a visitor or obtain a Visitor Visa before travel.

Important Warnings

• Select “visiting” when requesting an NZeTA if entering New Zealand, including cruise or cargo ship passengers.
• Selecting transit instead of visiting may result in an NZeTA that does not permit a visit.
• Passport and NZeTA details must match exactly; otherwise you may be unable to board.
• An NZeTA is not suitable for medical treatment.
• For stays longer than 3 months, or 6 months for UK citizens, obtain an appropriate visa before arrival.
• If you remain after your authority expires without a valid visa, you may be detained, deported, and prevented from returning to New Zealand.
