Purpose

This temporary visitor visa allows parents of New Zealand citizens or residents to visit children and grandchildren in New Zealand.

It does not provide a pathway to a resident visa.

Stay and travel

• Stay for up to 5 years from first entry.
• Enter New Zealand within 6 months of visa grant.
• Travel in and out of New Zealand multiple times during the visa period.
• There is no limit on the length of each visit.
• Leave New Zealand before the visa expires.
• Leave New Zealand during the third year for a health and insurance check.
• You can hold only 2 Parent Boost Visitor Visas.

Eligibility

You must:

• Have a child or children who are New Zealand citizens or residents.
• Be sponsored by an eligible adult child.
• Have no dependent children.
• Apply and remain outside New Zealand while applying.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Have genuine temporary visitor intentions.
• Meet financial requirements through your income, personal funds, or sponsor income.
• Obtain acceptable medical or travel insurance after approval in principle.

If including your partner, they must meet health, character and insurance requirements. You must provide relationship evidence.

Sponsorship

You need at least one sponsoring child aged 18 or older. You may have up to two joint sponsors.

Sponsors must be New Zealand citizens or residents and normally live in New Zealand. They must spend at least 184 days in New Zealand each visa year, counted from your first arrival.

Joint sponsors may be:

• Your adult child and their partner.
• Your adult children who are siblings.
• Your adult child and your partner’s adult child, if your partner is included.

Sponsors must agree to cover essential living costs, ensure access to health and financial support, and pay repatriation or deportation costs if required.

Financial requirements

Funds must be available for your use, not gifted or borrowed, and not subject to debt.

Insurance

Do not buy insurance before approval in principle, but research costs and suitable cover before applying.

After approval in principle, provide evidence of at least 12 months of acceptable medical insurance, travel insurance, or both. You must maintain acceptable insurance for every period you are in New Zealand.

Insurance must cover:

The insurer must have at least an A (strong) credit rating, or equivalent internationally recognised rating.

Changing to insurance that does not meet requirements may result in visa cancellation or deportation liability. Lack of valid insurance may also affect future visa eligibility.

Health and character

You and any included partner must meet a higher acceptable standard of health than for other visitor visas. Medical waivers are not available.

You may need a chest X-ray and medical examination. Do not arrange these until requested after submitting your application. Use an approved panel physician.

Medical evidence must be less than 3 months old when received.

Police certificates are required if you are aged 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or more, including previous stays. They must be from:

• Countries of citizenship.
• Countries where you spent more than 5 years since turning 17.

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when submitted, unless previously provided within the last 24 months.

Third-year health and insurance check

Before the fourth visa year begins, you must leave New Zealand and complete a health and insurance check from outside New Zealand.

You must provide:

• A new chest X-ray and medical examination.
• Evidence of acceptable insurance for the first year and every New Zealand visit.
• Health examinations completed by an overseas panel physician.

Remain outside New Zealand until Immigration New Zealand confirms you meet the conditions. This may take up to 3 months.

A form and processing fee will apply:

• NZD $325 for most applicants.
• NZD $240 for eligible Pacific fee band applicants.

Failure to complete the check, or failure to meet health requirements, may result in visa cancellation.

Rights and conditions

Work

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visitor visa.

You may be able to volunteer or work remotely for an overseas employer or client.

Study

You may study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.

Partner

You may include your partner when applying. After visa grant, you cannot add them to the visa. They must apply separately or be included in a second Parent Boost Visitor Visa application.

Required documents

Provide:

• Passport or certificate of identity.
• One acceptable photo.
• Proof of relationship to sponsor, such as a birth certificate.
• Evidence of finances or sponsor income.
• Medical evidence, if required.
• Police certificates, if required.
• English translations and scanned originals for non-English documents.

Your passport or identity document must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from New Zealand.

If sponsored by your child and their partner, provide evidence they have lived together for at least 12 months.

Your sponsor must provide:

• Passport or identity document.
• Evidence of New Zealand immigration status.
• Income evidence, if supporting your stay.

Applicants from specified locations may need extra forms:

• Chinese citizens applying from China, Hong Kong or Macau: INZ 1027.
• Hong Kong or Macau passport or identity-document holders applying in China, Hong Kong or Macau: INZ 1220 and an identity-card copy.

How to apply

1. Confirm you meet the visa requirements and research insurance.
2. Gather identity, relationship, financial, health and character documents.
3. Translate non-English documents into English.
4. Apply and pay online through Immigration New Zealand.
5. Your sponsor completes their online sponsorship form and uploads supporting evidence.
6. If approved in principle, submit acceptable insurance evidence within 3 months.
7. Receive an eVisa if approved.

Immigration New Zealand is not legally obliged to reconsider a declined Parent Boost Visitor Visa application.

Arrival and entry

Complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration before travel:

• Air travellers: from 24 hours before travel begins.
• Sea travellers: from 24 hours before the ship leaves its last overseas port.

Entry permission may be refused if you are not a genuine visitor, no longer meet character requirements, have changed circumstances, refuse biometric collection, or cannot show onward travel or funds to leave New Zealand.

Second Parent Boost Visitor Visa

You must be outside New Zealand to apply for your second visa.

You must show that you:

• Met all conditions of your first visa.
• Meet current sponsorship and financial requirements.
• Held acceptable insurance during every previous New Zealand visit.
• Meet current health requirements with new medical evidence less than 3 months old.
