Parent Retirement Resident Visa
A resident visa for parents or legal guardians of an adult New Zealand citizen or resident living in New Zealand, who have no dependent children and meet investment, settlement-fund and annual-income requirements.

Purpose
This visa is for parents or legal guardians who want to live permanently in New Zealand and have an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident living in New Zealand.
You must meet investment, settlement-fund and annual-income requirements.
Eligibility
You must:
- Have an adult child, aged 18 or over, who:
- is a New Zealand citizen or resident;
- lives in New Zealand; and
- if a resident, has no section 49 conditions.
- Have no dependent children.
- Be the child's parent or legal guardian.
- Meet identity, health and character requirements.
- Have at least NZD $1 million for acceptable New Zealand investments.
- Keep the investment for at least 4 years.
- Have at least NZD $500,000 in settlement funds.
- Have annual income of at least NZD $60,000.
- Show that investment funds were earned or acquired lawfully.
- Transfer investment funds to New Zealand through the banking system.
Investment funds cannot be borrowed or subject to a loan or bond. Investment, settlement funds and annual income must be separate amounts.
Investment Requirements
You must nominate the type, location and value of funds or assets you intend to invest.
Acceptable evidence may include:
- Bank statements
- Title deeds and property valuations
- Share certificates
- Business ownership documents
- Asset valuations
If funds are jointly owned with your recognised partner, you may claim their full value. If jointly owned with someone else, you may claim only your share.
After approval in principle, you have 12 months to transfer and invest the funds. This timeframe cannot be extended.
You must provide confirmation from a trusted professional, such as a chartered accountant or solicitor, showing:
- Your full name
- Investment amount in NZD
- Investment start date
- Investment type
- Invested organisation names
- Shares or bonds purchased
You may transfer funds between acceptable investments.
Required Evidence
Identity
Provide:
- Two acceptable head-and-shoulders photographs
- Original or certified passport or certificate of identity
- Original or certified full birth certificate
Additional identity documents may apply to applicants from certain countries or locations.
Health and Character
You must provide:
- A medical examination and chest X-ray
- Police certificates for applicants aged 17 or over
Police certificates are required from:
- Every country of citizenship; and
- Any country where you stayed for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply. Non-English certificates require English translations.
A medical and chest X-ray certificate submitted for another visa within the previous 36 months may not need to be resubmitted.
Child and Family Relationship
Provide evidence of:
- Your child's New Zealand citizenship or residence status
- Your child's residence in New Zealand
- Your relationship with the sponsoring child
- Your relationship with all other children
Evidence of your child living in New Zealand may include bills, employment records, tax records, benefit records, or housing documents.
Legal guardians and grandparents must provide additional evidence of guardianship and custody.
Funds and Income
Provide evidence of:
- Investment funds and assets
- Lawful source of funds
- Settlement funds accessible from New Zealand
- Annual income
Lawful-source evidence may include tax returns, payslips, business records, dividends, sale receipts, bank certificates, or inheritance documents. Gifted funds are acceptable only if the gift was unconditional, lawful, and lawfully earned or acquired.
Income may be earned alone or jointly with an included partner.
Partner
You may include your partner in the application.
Your partner must meet the visa's identity, health and character requirements. Provide evidence of your relationship, such as a marriage certificate.
Stay, Work and Study
The visa lets you live in New Zealand indefinitely.
You can:
- Work in New Zealand.
- Study in New Zealand.
- Include an eligible partner.
Travel
You can travel in and out of New Zealand during the first 2 years of the 4-year investment period.
After meeting the first 2 years' conditions, you can apply for a variation of conditions for travel during the final 2 years.
Your visa must be in a valid passport to travel. If your passport expires, apply to transfer the visa to your new passport before travelling.
Obligations and Conditions
During the 4-year investment period, you must:
- Keep at least NZD $1 million in acceptable New Zealand investments.
- Tell Immigration New Zealand if your address or contact details change.
- Provide investment evidence at the end of years 2 and 4.
You have 3 months to provide investment evidence when requested.
If Immigration New Zealand cannot confirm you meet the conditions, you may not be able to remain in New Zealand. If you do not meet visa conditions, you may have to leave New Zealand.
Arrival Requirements
Before travel, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
You can submit it:
- By air: from 24 hours before travel begins.
- By sea: from 24 hours before the ship leaves its last overseas port.
Entry permission may be refused if you no longer meet character requirements, your circumstances have changed, or you refuse biometric collection.
Applying
Processing and payment information depends on your passport nationality.
The stated visa cost is from NZD $12,850. Approval in principle is issued to 80% of applicants within 8 months.
If approved in principle, transfer and invest your funds within 12 months.
If you need to visit New Zealand to investigate investments, apply for a work visa. Your partner must apply separately for their own work or visitor visa.
Permanent Residence
After maintaining the required investment for 4 years, you may apply for a Permanent Resident Visa.
A Permanent Resident Visa allows travel in and out of New Zealand without travel conditions, provided the visa remains in a valid passport.
If you have section 49 conditions, you must meet them and apply to have them removed before applying for a Permanent Resident Visa. There is no cost to request removal of section 49 conditions.
