Purpose

This visa lets you visit New Zealand while your partner holds, or is applying for, a New Zealand student visa.

You may:

• Join your partner in New Zealand.
• Visit and explore New Zealand.
• Include dependent children aged 19 or younger.

Eligibility

You must:

• Have a partner who holds or is applying for a New Zealand student visa and is eligible to support you.
• Be living together in a genuine and stable relationship.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Be a genuine visitor and intend to leave New Zealand.
• Have enough money for living costs, or an acceptable sponsor.
• Not work in New Zealand.

Your partner must complete Form for Partners Supporting Partnership-Based Temporary Entry (INZ 1146) and provide identity evidence.

You can apply at the same time as your partner applies for their student visa. Your visa can only be granted after their student visa is approved.

Stay and extensions

If approved, your visa will normally last for the same period as your supporting partner’s student visa.

You must leave New Zealand before the visa expires.

To stay longer, apply for a new visitor visa before expiry if you have a genuine reason. A further visa is single-entry, and total stay is limited to 9 months in an 18-month period.

Financial and departure requirements

You must show either sufficient funds or an acceptable sponsor.

If paying for yourself, you need:

• NZD $1,000 per month, or
• NZD $400 per month if accommodation is prepaid.

You do not need to show funds if your student partner’s scholarship guarantees family maintenance and accommodation.

You must also show:

• An outward travel ticket to a country you may enter; or
• Funds to buy an outward ticket.

Funds for travel must be additional to living-cost funds. A sponsor may show funds to pay for onward travel.

Health and character

You must be in good health. Immigration New Zealand may require a medical examination, chest X-ray, or both.

For stays over 6 months, a chest X-ray is required in specified tuberculosis-risk circumstances. Health evidence must be less than 3 months old when received.

Police certificates may be required if you are aged 17 or older and your total New Zealand stay will be 24 months or longer. Certificates must:

• Be less than 6 months old when applying.
• Cover countries of citizenship.
• Cover countries where you lived over 5 years since age 17.

Police certificates not in English require English translations.

Rights and conditions

Work

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visitor visa.

You may be able to volunteer or work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

Study

You may study:

• Up to 3 months in any 12-month period.
• School-aged children: up to 3 months in a calendar year.

If children study for more than 2 weeks, their provider must meet the stated international learner pastoral-care requirements.

Health care

You or your sponsor must pay for health care or medical assistance. Full medical insurance is recommended.

Some people may be eligible for public health care.

Dependent children

You may include dependent children aged 19 or younger in your application, or they may apply separately.

For each child, provide:

• Identity evidence and acceptable photos.
• Evidence of your relationship, such as birth or adoption documents.
• Health and character evidence, if required.

Immigration New Zealand may request custody or guardianship evidence showing the child may leave their country of residence.

Required documents

Provide:

• Passport or certificate of identity.
• One acceptable photo online, or two paper photos.
• Evidence of your genuine and stable relationship.
• Completed INZ 1146 from your supporting partner.
• Financial evidence or completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025).
• Evidence of onward travel or funds for it.
• Medical or chest X-ray evidence, if required.
• Police certificates, if required.
• English translations and copies of non-English documents.
• Child identity and relationship documents, if including children.
• Additional Dependants for a Visitor Visa (INZ 1205), if required.

Your passport or certificate of identity must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure date.

Additional forms apply to certain applicants in China, Hong Kong and Macao:

• Chinese citizens applying from China, Hong Kong or Macao: INZ 1027.
• Hong Kong or Macao document holders applying there: INZ 1220 and identity-card copies.

How to apply

Apply online

1. Gather required identity, relationship, financial, health and character documents.
2. Obtain English translations for non-English documents.
3. Create or log into an Immigration New Zealand online account.
4. Complete the application, upload documents and pay applicable fees.
5. Monitor your account and provide any requested information.

If approved, Immigration New Zealand issues an eVisa by email.

Apply on paper

1. Gather supporting documents and translations.
2. Complete Partnership-based Temporary Visa Application (INZ 1198).
3. Attach all evidence.
4. Submit the application and pay the applicable fee.

Arrival and travel

All travellers must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration:

• By air: from 24 hours before travel begins.
• By sea: from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.

At arrival, carry evidence of:

• Onward travel, funds to buy a ticket, or sponsor support; and
• Funds for your stay.

You may be refused entry if you are not a genuine visitor, no longer meet requirements, cannot meet character requirements, or cannot show onward-travel arrangements.

Your eVisa records your travel conditions. If you leave New Zealand without a valid multiple-entry travel condition, your visa will expire.
