Purpose

This visa lets you join your partner in New Zealand where they hold, are eligible for, or are deemed to hold a New Zealand military visa.

You may visit New Zealand and study for a limited period, but cannot work in New Zealand.

Eligibility

You must:

• Have a partner eligible to support your application.
• Be living together in a genuine and stable relationship when applying.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Have genuine reasons to visit New Zealand.
• Intend to leave New Zealand when your visa expires.
• Not work during your stay.

Supporting partner requirements

Your partner must:

• Hold, be eligible for, or be deemed to hold a military visa.
• Complete the Form for Partners Supporting Partnership-Based Temporary Entry (INZ 1146).
• Provide an original or certified passport or certificate of identity.

Stay and visa validity

If approved, your visa will normally be granted for the same duration as your supporting partner’s military visa.

Your visa starts:

• On entry to New Zealand, if approved while you are offshore; or
• On the date granted, if you are already in New Zealand.

You must leave before the visa expires.

Rights and conditions

Work

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa.

You may be able to:

• Volunteer; or
• Work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

Study

You may study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.

Travel

You may leave and return to New Zealand only if your visa has a valid multiple-entry travel condition.

If you leave without a multiple-entry travel condition, your visa expires.

Each time you travel to New Zealand, you must have either:

• A ticket to leave New Zealand; or
• Evidence you can afford one.

This does not apply if your visa states: “Return/onward travel not required”.

Dependent children

You can include dependent children aged 19 or younger in your application, or they may apply separately based on their relationship to your partner.

Provide evidence of:

• Your relationship with each child, such as birth or adoption records.
• Each child’s identity.
• Their good health and character.

Immigration New Zealand may request evidence that a child has the right to leave their country of residence, such as custody or guardianship documents.

Required documents

Provide:

• Passport or certificate of identity copy.
• One acceptable photo for online applications, or two for paper applications.
• Partnership evidence.
• Completed INZ 1146 from your partner.
• Health evidence, if required.
• Police certificates, if required.
• English translations and original-document copies for non-English documents.
• Child identity and relationship evidence, if including children.
• Additional Dependants for a Visitor Visa (INZ 1205), if required.

Your passport or certificate of identity must remain valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from New Zealand.

Partnership evidence

Evidence should show:

• How long you have been together.
• How long you have lived together.
• Shared finances and responsibilities.
• Time spent together, including photos and communications.
• Recognition of the relationship by other people.

Health requirements

You must be in good health. Immigration New Zealand may require a medical examination, chest X-ray, or both.

Health evidence must be less than 3 months old when received.

If staying more than 6 months, a chest X-ray is required if you:

• Are a citizen of a country without low tuberculosis incidence; or
• Spent more than 3 months in the past 5 years in such a country.

Character requirements

You must be of good character. A criminal conviction or security risk may result in refusal.

Police certificates are required if you:

• Are aged 17 or older; and
• Will spend a total of 24 months or longer in New Zealand, including previous stays.

Certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply. They must cover:

• Countries of citizenship; and
• Countries where you have spent more than 5 years since age 17.

You may not need new certificates if you provided them in an earlier application and they were issued within the last 24 months.

Application process

Apply online

1. Gather identity, relationship, health, character and child documents.
2. Obtain certified English translations where needed.
3. Create or log into an Immigration New Zealand online account.
4. Complete the application, upload documents and pay fees.
5. Wait for Immigration New Zealand’s decision.
6. Check your online account for status updates.

If approved, Immigration New Zealand will issue an eVisa and email you a copy.

1. Gather supporting documents and translations.
2. Complete the Partnership-based Temporary Visa Application (INZ 1198).
3. Attach all evidence.
4. Submit the application and pay the required fee.

Arrival requirements

All travellers must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

You can submit it:

• By air: from 24 hours before your journey starts.
• By sea: from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.

You may be refused entry permission if you:

• Are not a genuine visitor.
• Do not meet character requirements.
• Have changed circumstances since visa approval.
• Refuse a photo, fingerprint or iris scan.

Staying longer

Apply for a new visitor visa before your current visa expires if you need more time for a genuine reason.

If approved:

• Your new visa will be single-entry.
• Your current visa will expire when the new visa is granted.
• Total stay may be up to 9 months in an 18-month period.

If you are in New Zealand and your current temporary visa expires while your application is pending, Immigration New Zealand will normally issue an Interim Visa to let you remain lawfully.
