Purpose and stay

This visa lets you work in New Zealand while your partner holds, is eligible for, or is deemed to hold a New Zealand military visa.

You may stay for the duration of your partner’s military visa. You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

If approved while you are outside New Zealand, the visa starts when you enter New Zealand. If approved while you are in New Zealand, it starts on the date it is granted.

Eligibility

You must:

• Have a partner who holds, is eligible for, or is deemed to hold a New Zealand military visa.
• Have a partner eligible to support your application.
• Be living together in a genuine and stable relationship when you apply.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand and intend to leave when your stay ends.

Your supporting partner must complete the Form for Partners Supporting Partnership-Based — Temporary Entry Applications (INZ 1146).

Work, study and travel rights

Work

You do not need a New Zealand job offer.

You may do any lawful work, anywhere in New Zealand, provided that you:

• Do not provide commercial sexual services.
• Do not invest in or operate a business providing commercial sexual services.
• Hold any occupational registration required for your work.

You may be a sole trader or own a business. However, as a business owner, you cannot employ anyone directly or indirectly.

You need an Inland Revenue (IRD) number to pay tax on employment income.

Study

You may study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.

Travel

You may travel in and out of New Zealand as often as you wish before the visa expires.

Evidence and documents

Provide:

• A passport or certificate of identity copy.
• One acceptable photo for online applications, or two for paper applications.
• Evidence of your genuine and stable relationship and shared living arrangements.
• Your partner’s identity evidence.
• Completed INZ 1146 support form.
• Chest X-ray or medical evidence, if required.
• Police certificates, if required.
• Certified English translations of non-English police and medical certificates.

Your passport or certificate of identity must remain valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from New Zealand.

Relationship evidence

Evidence should show:

• How long you have been together.
• How long you have lived together.
• Shared finances and responsibilities.
• Time spent together, including photos or communications.
• That others recognise your relationship.

Health evidence

You may be asked for a chest X-ray, medical examination, or both.

• Chest X-ray and medical results must be less than 3 months old when received.
• For stays over 6 months, a chest X-ray is required if you are from, or recently spent more than 3 months in, a country with a high incidence of tuberculosis.

Character evidence

Police certificates may be required if you are aged 17 or older and your total intended time in New Zealand is 24 months or more, including previous stays.

Certificates must:

• Be less than 6 months old when you apply.
• Cover countries of citizenship.
• Cover countries where you spent more than 5 years since turning 17.

You may not need new certificates if you supplied certificates issued within the last 24 months for an earlier visa application.

Family provisions

You cannot include dependent children in this application. They may apply separately for visas based on their relationship to you.

How to apply

Apply online

1. Gather identity, relationship, health and character evidence.
2. Create or log in to an Immigration New Zealand online account.
3. Complete the application, upload documents and pay applicable fees.
4. Monitor your account and respond to requests for further information.
5. If approved, receive an eVisa by email.

Apply on paper

Apply on paper if you have been told you do not need to pay the visa fee.

1. Gather required evidence.
2. Complete the Partnership-based Temporary Visa Application (INZ 1198).
3. Attach supporting documents.
4. Submit the application and pay any applicable fees.
5. If approved, receive an eVisa by email.

Arrival and ongoing obligations

Before travelling, complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration:

• By air: from 24 hours before travel begins.
• By sea: from 24 hours before the ship leaves its last overseas port.

Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa.

You may be refused entry permission if you:

• No longer have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.
• Do not meet character requirements.
• Have had a change in circumstances since the visa was issued.
• Refuse biometric collection, including photo, fingerprints or iris scan.

If you are in New Zealand while the application is being processed, you must hold a valid visa. If your temporary visa expires during processing, Immigration New Zealand will normally issue an Interim Visa.
