Purpose

This visa allows Pitcairn Islanders to visit New Zealand for up to 6 months. It may also be used for medical treatment where financially supported by Pitcairn Island authorities.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be a Pitcairn Islander.
• Have, or be eligible for, a British passport.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Genuinely intend to follow visa conditions.
• Have enough funds or an acceptable sponsor.
• Have onward travel arrangements or funds.
• Leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

British passport requirement

Immigration New Zealand checks your passport on arrival.

If you do not have a British passport, you may be:

• Given a certificate of identity.
• Granted a 6-week visitor visa.
• Advised to obtain a British passport.

Another visitor visa may be granted after you provide a British passport.

Stay and cost

Funds and onward travel

You must have either sufficient funds or an acceptable sponsor.

Living funds

You need, per person, per month:

• NZD $1,000, or
• NZD $400 if accommodation is already paid.

Evidence may include bank statements, credit-card statements, bank drafts, traveller's cheques, hotel receipts, or a completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025).

Onward travel

You must have:

• A ticket out of New Zealand; or
• Enough additional funds to buy one; or
• An acceptable sponsor for onward travel.

Your onward ticket must be to a country you can enter.

Health and character

You must be in good health. Immigration New Zealand may request a chest X-ray, medical examination, or both.

Normally:

• No chest X-ray is required for stays under 6 months.
• No medical certificate is required for stays under 12 months.

Police certificates are required if your total time in New Zealand will reach 24 months or more across all visits, or if Immigration New Zealand requests them.

Police certificates must:

• Be less than 6 months old when submitted.
• Cover countries of citizenship or where you lived over 5 years since age 17.

Applicants aged 16 or younger do not need police certificates. Previously provided certificates may be reused if less than 24 months old.

Medical treatment

For medical treatment, you must be sponsored by Pitcairn Island authorities.

Provide a letter from the Pitcairn Island administration officer confirming the authorities will cover your expenses, including return travel home.

Family provisions

You may include your partner and dependent children aged 19 or under.

You must provide:

• Evidence of your relationship, such as marriage or birth certificates.
• Identity evidence for family members.
• Evidence that family members meet health and character requirements.

Work and activities

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visitor visa.

You may be able to:

• Volunteer.
• Work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

If the Ministry of Social Development declares a seasonal labour shortage, you may apply to vary your conditions for seasonal work for up to 6 weeks.

You cannot apply again if you received a seasonal-work variation on your most recent visit.

Travel conditions

Your eVisa records your visa conditions.

To leave and return to New Zealand, you need valid multiple-entry travel conditions. If you leave without multiple-entry conditions, your visa expires.

Travel conditions appear on your visa label or visa letter.

Arrival requirements

All travellers must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD).

• Air travellers: Submit from 24 hours before travel begins.
• Sea travellers: Submit from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.

A paper declaration is available if you cannot complete it online.

You may be refused entry permission if you:

• Do not meet character requirements.
• Have changed circumstances since the visa was issued.
• Refuse biometric collection.
• Cannot show required onward-travel or funds evidence.

Customs and Biosecurity entry requirements also apply.

Required documents

Provide:

• One acceptable photo for online applications, or two for paper applications.
• Passport or certificate of identity.
• Evidence of funds, accommodation prepayment, sponsorship, or onward travel.
• English translations of documents not in English.

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your intended departure from New Zealand.

For online applications, upload a passport copy. Immigration New Zealand will advise if it requires your passport afterwards. For paper applications, provide the original passport or certified copy.

2. Provide identity, health, character, funds and onward-travel evidence.
3. Submit English translations where required.
4. Pay the applicable visa fee.
5. Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before travel.

Important warnings

• You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.
• You may need to show funds, sponsorship or onward-travel evidence at check-in or arrival.
• Unless your visa says “Return/onward travel not required”, you must maintain onward-travel arrangements.
• From 24 September 2026, new applications for most visitor visas must use enhanced Immigration Online.
