Onward travel

If leaving by commercial transport, provide:

  • A ticket to a country you may enter, or
  • Evidence you can buy one.

If leaving by private craft, provide either:

  • Proof of ownership and adequate major-damage insurance, for owners and dependants; or
  • A letter from the owner or captain confirming you will leave on that craft.

Family provisions

You may include your:

  • Partner; and
  • Dependent children aged 19 or younger.

Family members must have a genuine relationship with you and meet identity, health, character and bona fide requirements.

Required evidence

Identity

Provide:

  • One acceptable photo for an online application, or two for paper applications.
  • Your passport or certificate of identity.

For online applications, upload a passport copy. Immigration New Zealand will advise if it needs the original passport later.

Additional documents apply to:

  • Applicants applying within Hong Kong or Macao: identity-card copy. Paper applicants must also complete INZ 1220.

Health

Immigration New Zealand may require a chest X-ray, medical examination, or both.

Normally, you do not need:

  • A chest X-ray for stays under 6 months.
  • A medical certificate for stays under 12 months.

Applicants from China, Hong Kong or Macao applying in those locations may need a chest X-ray completed within the previous 3 months in specified circumstances.

Character

You must be of good character. A visa may not be granted if you have criminal convictions or present a security risk.

Police certificates are required if your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer across all visits, or if requested. They must:

  • Be less than 6 months old when submitted.
  • Cover countries where you are a citizen or lived over 5 years since age 17.

Applicants aged 16 or younger do not need police certificates.

Provide full English translations for documents not in English.

Rights and conditions

Work

You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa.

You may be able to volunteer or work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.

Travel

You need valid multiple-entry travel conditions to leave and return to New Zealand.

If you leave without multiple-entry travel conditions, your visa expires. Check your visa label or visa letter.

Onward travel and funds

While in New Zealand, you must continue to meet onward-travel and funds requirements. If living aboard a yacht, you must have NZD $400 per month or a sponsor.

Visa expiry

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

You may apply for further visas to stay up to 9 months, or up to 12 months if:

  • Your yacht or aircraft needs repairs; or
  • You want to wait out the South Pacific hurricane season, October to April.

Arrival requirements

Everyone must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

  • Air travellers: submit from 24 hours before travel begins.
  • Sea travellers: submit from 24 hours before the ship leaves its last overseas port.

You may be refused entry permission if you do not meet character requirements, your circumstances have changed, you refuse biometrics, or cannot show required funds or onward travel.

How to apply

Processing and payment information depends on your passport nationality.
