Purpose

The Professor visa is designed for foreign nationals holding appointments to teach, conduct research, or provide research guidance at Japanese universities, junior colleges (tanki daigaku), and colleges of technology (kōtō senmon gakkō). It covers full-time faculty, visiting professors, part-time lecturers, and research associates at recognized higher education institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

• Position: A confirmed appointment as a professor, associate professor, assistant professor, or lecturer at a recognized higher education institution in Japan.
• Credentials: A doctoral degree or equivalent academic credentials, or recognized professional expertise in the relevant field.
• Institution Type: The host institution must be a recognized higher education establishment under Japanese law.
• Contract: A formal employment contract or appointment letter from the host institution.
• Passport: A valid passport.

Stay, Costs, and Processing

• Period of Stay: Issued for 3 months, 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years.

Application Steps

1. Secure Appointment: Obtain a formal job offer or appointment letter from a Japanese higher education institution.
2. COE Filing: The host institution in Japan files the COE application on the applicant's behalf with the regional immigration bureau.
3. Receive COE: The COE is issued (typically taking 1–3 months).
4. Visa Application: Submit the COE, passport, visa form, and photos to the local Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
5. Entry to Japan: Receive the visa sticker and travel to Japan.
6. Municipal Registration: Register your residential address at the local municipal office within 14 days of arrival.

Important Warnings and Notes

• K–12 Instruction Excluded: Teaching at primary, junior high, or senior high schools requires an Educator visa rather than a Professor visa.
• Private and Non-University Research: Research activities conducted at private companies or independent government research institutes without a university teaching appointment fall under the Researcher visa.
