Purpose & Overview

The Religious Activities visa (宗教) is granted to foreign clergy, missionaries, pastors, priests, monks, imams, and religious educators dispatched by an overseas religious organization to conduct ministry, missionary outreach, ceremonies, or religious education at an affiliated Japanese branch or institution.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Official Dispatch: Must be assigned to Japan by a recognized overseas religious organization.
• Host Institution: The receiving Japanese body should ideally be a registered religious corporation (宗教法人登記事項証明書) or equivalent.
• Financial Support: Living expenses and compensation must be provided by the religious organization, not from outside employment.
• Permitted Activities: Must engage exclusively in religious work (worship leadership, missionary outreach, doctrine instruction).
• Immigration Standing: Must hold a valid passport with no serious immigration violations.

Stay and Renewal

• Validity Periods: Issued for periods of 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years (single residence period up to 3 years).

Application Steps

4. Submit Visa Application: Once the COE is issued, apply for the visa sticker at the local Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
5. Enter Japan & Register: Travel to Japan and register your local residential address at the municipal office within 14 days.
6. Commence Ministry: Begin religious activities at the designated facility.

Important Warnings

• Dispatched Clergy Only: Applicants must be formally dispatched by an overseas religious body; independent religious workers without formal overseas affiliation do not qualify.
• Strict Scope of Activity: Ministry cannot be mixed with paid secular employment unless an appropriate secondary work permit is secured.
