Purpose and stay

This visa is for owners and crew travelling to New Zealand on a privately owned super yacht.

It allows you to:

• Visit on a privately owned yacht over 20 metres long, powered by motor, sail, or both.
• Stay in or travel in and out of New Zealand for up to 6 months.
• Apply for further visas that may allow a total stay of up to 12 months.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be visiting New Zealand on a privately owned super yacht.
• Meet identity, health, character and genuine-intention requirements.
• Agree to pay your own health care costs.
• Show enough funds or have an acceptable sponsor.
• Meet onward-travel requirements.

Funds

Provide evidence of at least:

• NZD $1,000 per person per month, or
• NZD $400 per person per month if living onboard or accommodation is prepaid.

Evidence may include bank or credit-card statements, accommodation receipts, bank drafts, traveller’s cheques, or an acceptable sponsor’s completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025).

Onward travel

If leaving by commercial transport, provide:

• A ticket to a country you may enter, or
• Enough money to buy one.

If leaving by private craft:

• Owners and dependants need ownership evidence and major-damage insurance.
• Crew and passengers need a letter from the owner or captain confirming departure on that craft.

Documents and evidence

Provide:

• One acceptable photo for online applications, or two for paper applications.
• Your passport or certificate of identity.
• Certified full English translations for documents not in English.
• Health or character evidence if requested.

For an online application, upload a passport copy. Immigration New Zealand will advise if the original passport is needed later.

Health

Immigration New Zealand may request a chest X-ray, medical examination, or both.

Normally:

• A chest X-ray is not required for stays under 6 months.
• A medical certificate is not required for stays under 12 months.

Applicants from China, Hong Kong or Macao applying in those places may need a chest X-ray completed within the previous 3 months in specified circumstances.

Character

You must be of good character. A visa may not be granted if you have a criminal conviction or pose a security risk.

Police certificates are required if your total time in New Zealand will reach 24 months or more across all visits, or if requested. They must:

• Be less than 6 months old when submitted.
• Cover countries where you are a citizen or lived over 5 years since age 17.

Applicants aged 16 or younger do not need police certificates.

Family provisions

You may include:

• Your partner.
• Dependent children aged 19 or younger.

Each family member must meet identity, health, character and bona fide requirements. You must show a genuine relationship with included family members.

Family members may instead apply for their own visas.

Work and conditions

You can continue working as superyacht crew while in New Zealand.

You may also be able to work remotely for an overseas employer or client while holding this visitor visa.

You must:

• Maintain required funds or sponsorship.
• Have onward travel arrangements.
• Pay any health care or medical-assistance costs.
• Leave New Zealand before the visa expires.

Full medical insurance is recommended for your visit.

Travel and arrival

You need a valid multiple-entry travel condition to return to New Zealand after leaving. If you leave without this condition, your visa expires.

Before arriving by sea, contact New Zealand Customs for arrival requirements.

Within 72 hours of arrival, you must present yourself to an Immigration Officer at an Immigration Control Area to apply for entry permission.

Important warnings

Entry permission may be refused if you:

• No longer meet character requirements.
• Have changed circumstances since visa grant.
• Refuse a photo, fingerprint, or iris scan.
• Cannot show required onward travel or funds.

How to apply
