Purpose

This visa allows Swedish citizens aged 18 to 30 to holiday in New Zealand while undertaking temporary work and limited study or training.

Eligibility

You must:

  • Be a Swedish citizen with a valid Swedish passport.
  • Be aged 18 to 30.
  • Have at least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
  • Have an onward ticket or enough additional money to buy one.
  • Have full medical insurance, including hospitalisation cover, for your entire stay.
  • Genuinely intend to meet all visa conditions.
  • Be in good health and of good character.
  • Not previously have been approved for a New Zealand working holiday visa, even if you did not use it.

Previous working holiday approvals from countries other than New Zealand are allowed.

Stay and Travel

  • Stay for up to 12 months.
  • Enter New Zealand within 12 months after the visa is granted.
  • If granted while outside New Zealand, the visa starts when you enter New Zealand.
  • If granted while in New Zealand, the visa starts on the grant date.
  • Travel in and out of New Zealand as often as you like before visa expiry.
  • Leave New Zealand before the visa expires.

Work Rights and Restrictions

You do not need a job offer.

You may work in any legal job if you:

  • Work under an employment contract or contract for services.
  • Do not take a permanent job.
  • Do not operate a business as an owner.
  • Do not provide commercial sexual services.
  • Do not invest in a business providing commercial sexual services.

You must pay tax on New Zealand earnings. You will need a New Zealand bank account and an IRD number.

Study

You may study or train for up to 6 months in total during your stay.

Required Evidence

Identity

Provide passport details in the online application. Enter details exactly as shown in your passport.

Passport validity requirements:

  • Applying outside New Zealand: passport valid at least 15 months after first arrival.
  • Applying in New Zealand: passport valid at least 3 months after visa expiry.

Funds and Onward Travel

Provide evidence of:

  • At least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
  • An onward travel ticket, or enough additional money to buy one.

Evidence may include bank statements, credit-card statements, bank drafts or traveller's cheques.

Health and Character

You may be asked for:

  • A chest X-ray or medical examination.
  • Police certificates.

Insurance

Provide proof of full medical insurance, including hospitalisation cover. This may include an insurance certificate or insurer approval letter.

Application Steps

  1. Apply online through Immigration New Zealand online services.
  2. Provide passport details and answer character questions.
  3. Submit any further health, character or evidence documents requested.
  4. Pay the applicable fee.

Arrival Requirements

Before travelling, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration:

  • By air: from 24 hours before your journey begins.
  • By sea: from 24 hours before your ship leaves its last overseas port for New Zealand.

A paper declaration is available if you cannot complete it online.

Ongoing Obligations

While in New Zealand, you must:

  • Keep at least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
  • Maintain full medical insurance.
  • Keep onward travel arrangements or sufficient funds to leave.
  • Comply with all work, study and visa conditions.

Immigration New Zealand may ask to see evidence of funds, insurance or onward travel when you arrive.

Important Warnings

You may be refused entry permission if you:

  • Are not a genuine visitor.
  • Do not meet character requirements.
  • Have changed circumstances since the visa was issued.
  • Refuse a photo, fingerprint or iris scan.
  • Cannot show onward travel evidence or sufficient funds to leave New Zealand.
