Purpose

This resident visa is for people who held a Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa and have worked for an accredited employer in New Zealand for at least 24 months.

It allows you to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely.

Eligibility

You must:

• Be in New Zealand when applying.
• Hold, and have held for at least 24 months, a Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa.
• Have worked for an accredited employer for at least 24 months while holding that visa.
• Have ongoing employment with an eligible employer.
• Meet the minimum income requirement.
• Be of good character and good health.
• Hold full or provisional New Zealand occupational registration, if required for your occupation.

Your employer must not be on the Labour Inspectorate list of non-compliant employers.

Ongoing employment

Your employment must be either:

• Permanent or indefinite; or
• For a stated term of at least 12 months.

If you changed employers while holding the work visa, your visa conditions must have been changed to allow the new employment.

Income requirement

You must earn, before tax:

• At least NZD $55,000 a year; or
• At least NZD $79,560 a year if you applied for your Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa on or after 7 October 2019.

You must provide an Inland Revenue Summary of Earnings.

Minimum earnings exclude allowances such as:

• Overtime
• Tool or uniform allowances
• Medical insurance
• Accommodation

If you earn NZD $90,000 or more and applied for your work visa before 7 October 2019, Immigration New Zealand may grant a Permanent Resident Visa.

Family provisions

You may include your:

• Partner
• Dependent children aged 24 or younger

Family members must meet resident visa requirements for identity, character, health and English language.

You must provide evidence of your relationship with your partner and dependent children.

If your partner or dependent children hold, or applied for, a temporary New Zealand visa based on their relationship with you, you must include them in your residence application.

English for family

Your partner and dependent children aged 16 or over must meet a minimum English standard. Evidence may include:

• An acceptable English language test result
• An English-speaking background
• Other evidence they are competent English speakers

Test results must be no more than 2 years old.

Family members who do not meet English requirements may still be included, but you must pay for English language classes before residence can be approved.

Required documents

Provide:

• One photo for online applications, or two for paper applications.
• Original or certified copy of your passport or certificate of identity.
• Original or certified copy of your full birth certificate.
• Police certificates, if aged 17 or over.
• Medical examination and chest X-ray.
• Inland Revenue Summary of Earnings.
• Evidence of qualifying employment.
• Occupational registration evidence, if required.
• Family relationship evidence, if including family.
• English language evidence for included family members aged 16 or over.

Police certificates

If you are 17 or older, provide police certificates from:

• Your country of citizenship; and
• Any country where you lived for 12 months or more during the last 10 years.

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply. Non-English certificates require an English translation.

Applicants applying within Hong Kong or Macao must also provide a copy of their identity card.

Rights after grant

Work

You may work for any employer and in any occupation.

Study

You may undertake any study.

Travel

You may travel in and out of New Zealand as often as you like until your travel conditions expire.

Travel conditions normally expire 2 years after your first arrival in New Zealand as a resident.

Important warnings

• If you are outside New Zealand when your travel conditions expire, your visa will also expire.
• After travel conditions expire, apply for either a variation of travel conditions or a Permanent Resident Visa before travelling.
• Your visa must be held in a valid passport to travel.
• If your passport expires, apply to transfer your visa to a new passport before travelling.

A visa transfer requires:

• Your old and new passports
• An Application for Transfer or Confirmation of a Visa
• Payment of a transfer fee
