Purpose
This visa is for people aged 66 or older who can invest in New Zealand. It allows a stay of up to 2 years.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be aged 66 or older.
- Be in good health and of good character.
- Genuinely intend to comply with visa conditions.
- Have at least NZD $750,000 to invest in New Zealand.
- Have at least NZD $500,000 available for living costs.
- Have annual income of at least NZD $60,000.
- Maintain acceptable travel and/or health insurance in New Zealand.
Investment requirements
You must:
- Invest at least NZD $750,000 in acceptable New Zealand investments for 2 years.
- Nominate the proposed investment’s type, location and value.
- Show that investment funds were earned or acquired lawfully.
- Transfer investment funds directly from your bank account through the banking system.
Borrowed funds, or funds subject to a loan or bond, are not normally accepted.
If approved in principle, you have 3 months to transfer and invest the nominated funds. This timeframe cannot be extended.
You may transfer funds between acceptable investments during the investment period.
Maintenance and income
Maintenance funds must be separate from both your investment funds and annual income. Funds must be accessible from New Zealand.
Annual income may be earned by you alone or jointly with an included partner.
Rights and Conditions
Travel
After your first arrival, you may travel in and out of New Zealand for 2 years.
Study
You may study for up to 3 months in any 12-month period.
Work
You cannot work in New Zealand on this visa.
You may be able to volunteer or work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.
Investment and insurance
While in New Zealand, you must:
- Keep at least NZD $750,000 invested in acceptable investments for 2 years.
- Maintain acceptable travel and/or health insurance.
- Provide Immigration New Zealand with your address and contact details.
- Notify Immigration New Zealand if your contact details change.
- Leave New Zealand before the visa expires.
Partner and Children
You may include your partner in your application. Your partner must meet visa health, character and identity requirements.
You must provide evidence of your relationship and your partner’s identity.
You cannot bring dependent children on this visa.
Required Evidence
Provide:
- Two acceptable head-and-shoulders photographs.
- Your passport or certificate of identity.
- Evidence of age, such as a birth certificate, passport or identity card.
- Evidence of investment funds and assets, such as bank statements, title deeds, valuations, share certificates or business ownership documents.
- Evidence showing the lawful source of investment funds.
- Evidence of maintenance funds.
- Evidence of annual income, such as pension, rental, dividend, interest or business-income records.
- Evidence of partnership, if including a partner.
- Full English translations for documents not in English.
For acceptable investments, provide confirmation from a trusted professional, such as a chartered accountant or solicitor, showing the investment amount, date, type and relevant organisations or securities.
Health and Character
Immigration New Zealand may require a chest X-ray, medical examination, or both.
You must provide police certificates if your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer across all visits, or if requested. Certificates must:
- Be less than 6 months old when submitted.
- Cover countries where you are a citizen.
- Cover countries where you spent more than 5 years since age 17.
Previously submitted police certificates do not need to be sent again if they are less than 24 months old.
Application Steps

Arrival Requirements
All travellers must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
- Air travellers: submit from 24 hours before travel begins.
- Sea travellers: submit from 24 hours before departure from the last overseas port.
You may be refused entry permission if you no longer meet character requirements, your circumstances have changed, or you refuse biometric collection.
Staying Longer
You may apply for another Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa if you still meet all requirements and can show that you maintained insurance and kept funds invested during the 2-year stay.
