Purpose

This visa allows eligible Vietnamese citizens to holiday, work temporarily, and study or train in New Zealand.

The visa is currently closed and will open at 10:00 on 3 November 2026 (NZDT).

Eligibility

You must:

• Be aged 18 to 30.
• Be a citizen of Vietnam with a valid Vietnamese passport.
• Have not previously received a New Zealand working holiday visa, even if you did not use it.
• Hold a university qualification involving at least 3 years of full-time university study.
• Speak and understand English.
• Be in good health and of good character.
• Have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.
• Have at least NZD $4,200 for living costs.
• Hold full medical insurance for your entire stay.
• Have onward travel arrangements, or enough additional money to buy a ticket.

Your passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after your visa expires.

Previous working holiday visas for countries other than New Zealand do not prevent an application.

Stay and Travel

You can stay for up to 12 months.

You must enter New Zealand within 12 months of visa issue. If you do not arrive within that period, the visa expires and you cannot apply for another New Zealand working holiday visa.

Your visa starts:

• On arrival in New Zealand, if approved while you are overseas; or
• On the date it is issued, if you are already in New Zealand.

After arrival, you may travel in and out of New Zealand as often as you wish before the visa expires.

Work Rights and Conditions

You may work in temporary jobs for up to 12 months. You do not need a job offer to apply.

You must:

• Work under an employment or services contract.
• Work only in legal employment.
• Work for any one employer no longer than 3 months.
• Pay tax and obtain an Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number.

You must not:

• Take a permanent job.
• Operate a business as its owner.
• Provide commercial sexual services.
• Invest in a business providing commercial sexual services.

Study

You may study or train for up to 6 months total during your stay.

Family

Your partner or children cannot be included in this application. Each family member who wishes to travel to New Zealand must apply for their own visa.

Required Evidence

At application

Provide your passport details.

If requested after application

Immigration New Zealand may request:

• Medical examination or chest X-ray evidence.
• Police certificates.
• University qualification evidence.
• An acceptable English-language test result.
• Evidence of at least NZD $4,200 available funds.
• Full medical insurance evidence.
• Onward ticket, or funds to purchase one.

Acceptable funds evidence may include bank statements, credit-card statements, bank drafts, or traveller’s cheques.

Insurance evidence may include an insurance certificate or insurer approval letter. Insurance must include hospital cover.

English test results must be no more than 2 years old.

If required:

• Medical evidence must be less than 3 months old when received.
• Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when submitted.
• Non-English police and medical certificates require certified English translations.

How to Apply

1. Gather your passport, qualification, English test, financial, insurance, and departure evidence.
2. Arrange translations where required.
3. Apply online in English through the working holiday online application.
4. Upload documents and pay the applicable fee.
5. Check your online account for updates.
6. Immigration New Zealand will email its decision.

If approved, you will receive an eVisa.

Arrival Requirements

Before travel, complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.

• Air travellers may submit it from 24 hours before their journey begins.
• Sea travellers may submit it from 24 hours before their ship leaves its last overseas port.

You may be refused entry permission if you are not a genuine visitor, no longer meet character requirements, have changed circumstances, refuse biometrics, or cannot show onward travel or sufficient departure funds.

Staying Longer

If you complete 3 months of seasonal work in the viticulture or horticulture industries, you may be eligible for a further 3 months through a Working Holiday Extension Work Visa.

If your temporary visa expires while that application is being decided, Immigration New Zealand will normally issue an Interim Visa to allow lawful stay.
