Purpose
This Work Permit allows an eligible employer to hire a Malaysian confinement nanny to help with a newborn in Singapore.
Eligibility
Employer
The employer must:
- Be at least 21 years old when applying.
- Have a newborn under four months old.
- Obtain a Work Permit for the nanny.
- Pay the required monthly levy.
Confinement nanny
The nanny must:
- Be a Malaysian citizen.
- Be at least 23 and below 70 years old when applying.
- Work at the employer’s residence.
Application timing and stay
Apply from four weeks before the expected delivery date until 16 weeks after the child’s birth.
The Work Permit is valid for up to 16 weeks from the child’s date of birth. Applying after birth results in a shorter validity period.
The permit is not renewable. If applying more than 16 weeks after birth, apply instead for a Work Permit for a migrant domestic worker.
Cost and levy
- Application fee: $35 for each application.
- Monthly levy:
- $60 if the newborn is a Singapore citizen.
- $300 if the newborn is not a Singapore citizen.
If the employer also has a registered helper, a combined monthly levy may be deducted through GIRO.
There is no minimum qualifying salary. The nanny’s salary is taxable.
Medical insurance
Medical insurance is required for the nanny.
The source states a minimum coverage of $15,000 during employment. For policies effective on or after 1 July 2023, the minimum coverage increases to $60,000 per year.
A medical examination is optional, but may be considered because the nanny will be in contact with a newborn.
Work conditions
The nanny must work only at the employer’s residence.
The employer and nanny are subject to basic Work Permit conditions. The nanny cannot work for other employers or in an occupation not stated in the Work Permit.
How to apply
An employer or appointed employment agency may apply through the FDW eService.
- Obtain the nanny’s written consent.
- If using an employment agency, authorise the agency through FDW eService.
- Submit the Work Permit application online.
- State the nanny’s intended work start date if needed.
- Pay the $35 application fee by Visa, Mastercard, or PayNow.
- Check the application status after one week.
Processing is generally within one week, unless further information is required.
Before arrival
If approved:
- Print the in-principle approval (IPA) letter.
- The nanny must show the IPA letter to the immigration officer upon arrival.
- Ensure the nanny meets the latest Singapore travel requirements.
Arrival and work start
The nanny receives a Work Permit letter, not a Work Permit card.
At immigration, the nanny will receive a visit pass stamped in her passport to allow her to stay in Singapore.
The employer must inform the Ministry of Manpower of the nanny’s start date before she begins work. If this was not provided in the application, submit it through FDW eService after approval.
Extension and cancellation
If employment continues beyond the visit pass expiry date, extend the nanny’s stay.
Cancel the Work Permit when employment ends.
